Race with Mario and Friends in Mario Kart Tour on the Play Store

Nintendo doesn't always have the best reputation for mobile games, especially since they struggle to get the formula correct when it comes to sequels. But, for some players, this is a gem among Android games on Google Play store. When they get it right, their titles truly shine; and this is a perfect example of greatness.

The official trailer above shows off some of the gameplay for the upcoming release of Mario Kart Tour. The game retains all the racing elements of Mario Kart and has players collecting drivers such as Mario, as well as karts and gliders. Players can choose which drivers, karts and gliders to use in races across a variety of courses, including new takes on classic courses and special city courses. City courses, special in-game event courses inspired by real-world locations, will be available during specific periods. In addition to courses based on iconic locales, some Mario Kart characters will get variations that incorporate the local flavor of cities featured in the game.

Mario Kart Tour will be available to download for iOS and Android devices via their respective app stores. Furthermore, a Nintendo Account is also required to play Mario Kart Tour. Players can obtain their in-game registration card by linking their Nintendo Account. Those who do not already have a Nintendo Account will have to create one at the company's official website.

But these aren't really the biggest problems. Mario Kart Tour is an aggressively monetized free-to-play title that pushes you towards spending real money early and often. Getting high-scores is less dependent on actually performing well and more dependent on having the right character, glider, and kart for the job, all of which can be obtained through the randomized loot system. We've got daily login bonuses, challenges that award meager amounts of premium currency, a progression system that starts slow and quickly becomes onerous, a subscription that lets you fast track rewards, the whole shebang. This is a cobbled-together piece of every microtransaction strategy on the market, and the game wants to push all of them. Mario Kart in general, and particularly Super Mario Kart 8 deluxe, is content to sideline progression mechanics and simply let you race for the joy of racing. Mario Kart Tour wants you to race for the joy of filling up progress bars and becoming frustrated enough to spend money.

Mario Kart Tour is free to play but also offers a Gold Pass subscription option for $4.99 a month, allowing game play in 200cc which provides faster moving karts, along with extra in game bonus gifts. But without the Gold Pass you can still buy new items with the in-game currency: rubies. Rubies are fairly easy to come by, you are gifted them by earning stars which in turn earns you gifts, and allows new karts, gliders, and characters to be obtained.

This new shop will let you use rubies - the in-game currency earnable by simply playing - to get karts, drivers, and gliders as well. Being able to purchase all of these cool items simply by playing rather than having to drop real money is always good news, and makes Mario Kart Tour less of a gacha game and more of a racing game first.

As you can see above, the mobile gameplay follows much the same format as the original game's gameplay for Switch. You hop in a kart, pick your favorite character, and go! Along the track you will be able to pick up items that can help you take down other characters or speed past them.

In a word, lots. As you play you can collect coins to buy new racers, karts, and gliders. Each of them can also be randomly collected buy using the rubies you are awarded and that you can buy for real money. They are a lot of choices here but you don't have to spend real money to collect them if you are patient.

Most of the things you can collect can also be upgraded. As you play each race the driver, kart, and glider you use will level up very slowly using the XP awarded to you. You can get XP boost tickets as well. These are rewarded for completing challenges and can be purchased as well.

In order to level up, players must take advantage of level-boost tickets. Each kart, glider, and driver has a gauge that increases its skill level with the help of these tickets. You'll unlock more abilities and perks. Level-boost tickets are gained by racing or by paying for the Gold Pass.

Nintendo fans have been waiting a long time for Mario Kart Tour for mobile devices - more than a year - and now, the game is finally live on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You can head to your phone's respective app stores and download the game. According to the description on the Apple App Store, the servers will go live at around 1:00 PDT or around 1:30pm IST. The games shows up on both store here in India and we were able to play it on both Android and iOS, which means the servers seem to be live now, although this could vary by regions.

The release date and time was announced in a September 21 tweet from the official Mario Kart Tour Twitter account, which also pointed out that while the game may be available for download before the official release date, it won't be playable until September 25.

We also know that Mario Kart Tour will include the increasingly controversial microtransactions. You'll need a Nintendo Account to play, but can create one for free, and start racing right away. Where the microtransactions come into play will likely relate to obtaining and updating drivers, karts, and gliders. So, while Mario Kart Tour is entirely free to play, microtransactions may be the secret to unlocking its full potential. We'll have to wait and see.

Earn Grand Stars by racing or fire off the featured pipe to receive more drivers, karts, and gliders! You can also proudly display badges, earned by completing certain challenges, next to your in-game name!

Boost with the best of 'em! Your high scores will determine how you compare to other players all over the world. Keep practicing and trying out different combinations of drivers, karts, and gliders to increase your score and rise to the top!

Mario Kart Tour is a free download from the App Store, requires iOS 10 or later to play, and officially supports iPhone 5s or iPad Air and later devices. A Nintendo Account is also required to play the game. [Direct Link]
