The Ultimate Guide to Flappy Bird Download and Tips

Graphically, Flappy Bird is very basic and looks like its come straight out of an 8-bit console. The bird himself is cute and his little pixelated face makes you feel all the sorrier when you smack him into a pipe for the 500th time.

Flappy Bird is a mobile game developed by the Vietnamese video game artist and programmer Dong Nguyen (Vietnamese: Nguyễn Hà Đông), under his game development company .Gears.[1] The game is a side-scroller where the player controls a bird, attempting to fly between columns of green pipes without hitting them. Nguyen created the game over the period of several days, using a bird protagonist that he had designed for a cancelled game in 2012.

The game was released in May 2013 but received a sudden spike in popularity in early 2014 and became a sleeper hit. Flappy Bird received poor reviews from some critics, who criticized its high level of difficulty and alleged plagiarism in graphics and game mechanics, while other reviewers found it addictive. At the end of January 2014, it was the most downloaded free game in the App Store for iOS. During this period, its developer said that Flappy Bird was earning $50,000 a day from in-app advertisements as well as sales.

Flappy Bird is an arcade-style game in which the player controls the bird Faby, which moves persistently to the right. The player is tasked with navigating Faby through pairs of pipes that have equally sized gaps placed at random heights. Faby automatically descends and only ascends when the player taps the touchscreen. Each successful pass through a pair of pipes awards the player one point. Colliding with a pipe or the ground ends the gameplay. During the game over screen, the player is awarded a bronze medal if they reached ten or more points, a silver medal from twenty points, a gold medal from thirty points, and a platinum medal from forty points.[6][7][8][9]

Flappy Bird was created and developed by Nguyen in two to three days. The bird character, Faby, was originally designed in 2012 for a cancelled platform game.[11] The gameplay was inspired by the act of bouncing a ping pong ball against a paddle for as long as possible.[12] Initially the game was significantly easier than it became in the final version, but Nguyen said he found this version to be boring and subsequently tightened up the difficulty.[12] He described the business plan of a free download with in-game advertisements as "very common in the Japanese market".[13]

Flappy Bird was originally released on May 24, 2013,[14] with support for the iPhone 5. The game was subsequently updated for iOS 7 in September 2013. Although originally unsuccessful, the game received a massive influx of players after being reviewed by the Swedish YouTuber PewDiePie.[15] In January 2014, it topped the Free Apps chart in the US and Chinese App Stores,[16] and later that month topped the same section of the UK App Store where it was touted as "the new Angry Birds".[1] It ended January as the most downloaded App on the App Store.[17] The Android version of Flappy Bird was released to the Google Play store on January 30, 2014.[18] In early 2014, Nguyen said in an interview with The Verge that the game was earning around $50,000 a day in revenue through its in-game advertising.[13]

According to some Vietnamese newspapers, including Thanh Niên and BBC Vietnamese, Flappy Bird is very similar to a game released in 2011 (two years before Flappy Bird) called Piou Piou vs. Cactus, from the gameplay (by tapping on the screen) to the main character design (a small yellow bird with big red beak) to the obstacles (green cacti and pipes).[45] It is reported that several French newspapers such as 20 Minutes and Metronews accused Flappy Bird of being a clone.[46] The reporter from Thanh Niên Online tried playing Piou Piou vs. Cactus and confirmed that the similarities between the two games are astonishing.[47]

After all, Nguyen told The Verge last week, the game's massive popularity -- with more than 50 million people having downloaded it -- was earning him $50,000 per day, thanks to the billions of ad impressions Flappy Bird was serving up to the millions of people (myself included) who could not manage to put it down. He later told Forbes he couldn't confirm the $50,000 number, saying only that he knows "it's a lot."

But fear not, Flappy Bird addicts: That notion is rather unrealistic. For one thing, Nguyen's decision to remove the game from Apple's App Store and Google Play doesn't in any way affect people who already downloaded it -- the very people who are already addicted. It does mean (if he's true to his word that he's out and out done with Flappy Bird) that there won't be any further updates, but the game will still work fine.

Then again, others have suggested that perhaps his decision to shut the game down (sort of) was really a work of marketing genius. After all, as Subramanian noted, the shutdown announcement generated unbelievable amounts of attention, and presumably floods of last-minute downloads, not to mention gigantic numbers of hours of Flappy Bird game play. "I've been seeing more top scores in my Facebook feed popping up over the last week," Subramanian said. "When people are playing, and getting to level 40, or 100, 200, the number of times they're doing that, they're generating multiple ad impressions. That will continue to happen as long as people continue playing the game."

First, if you've already installed Flappy Bird on your iPhone or iPad, it's not going to magically disappear now that it's gone from Apple's App Store. You can still play it, but the app will no longer get any new features or bug fixes. If you accidentally delete Flappy Bird, you may still be able to download it again from the "Purchased" section in the iPhone/iPad App Store, but there's no guarantee it'll stay there. (We were able to re-download Flappy Bird today using this method.)

It's a different story with Android users. The official Flappy Bird app may be gone from the Google Play store for Android, but it's been "cloned" by a lot of developers, meaning you can download the same file to your device from another site.

Before you do that though, you need to give Android permission to download apps from outside the official Google Play store. (Fair warning, this could open up your phone to viruses and malware, so only install stuff from trusted sites.) You can do that by going to the settings menu on your device and enabling the option to install apps from external sources. This option is in a different place on different Android phones, so you'll have to dig around a bit. It's usually under the "Apps" section in preferences.

Flappy Bird, known for its minimalistic yet challenging controls, has been downloaded 50 million times since it launched for iOS last September and for Android last month. Players are tasked with propelling a tiny bird through a maze of pipes by tapping on the screen, the objective being to rack up as high a score as possible. If the bird hits a pipe or the ground, the game restarts.

Using the same bird concept as Flappy Bird, Fly Birdie is a rip-off of the original - and we really do mean rip-off. The goal is to just "tap tap tap and make the birdie fly" without hitting obstacles. It's not as visually appealing as Flappy Bird, and it was a little easy, but if you're on iOS and miss the feeling of flying a bird through the open air, it may be for you.

Fly a bird from your wrist! Tiny Bird takes itself on to the Pebble smartwatch as a Flappy Bird alternative. In black and white, the app is available from the new appstore found on the Pebble app on the App Store and Google Play.

With a bird that defecates and makes noises when it hits an obstacle, Flappy Wings says it offers better gameplay than Flappy Bird "with an improved formula". It uses simple controls and a catchy soundtrack to try to be the premiere Flappy Bird alternative on Android.

The end result is a little rudimentary but it works! You can download different versions of the Flappy Owl workbook from the links below. If you're interested in how I made it you can follow the Flappy Owl in Excel VBA tutorial and maybe have a go for yourself. I'm also planning to make a video version of the tutorial if you prefer watching to reading. The screenshot below gives you an idea of what the game looks like:

I haven't made any special effort to protect the workbook or the code inside it so you're welcome to poke around to see how things work although, of course, the tutorial will hopefully explain that pretty well. Try changing a few things if you don't like the way the game works, you can always download a fresh copy if you break it irrevocably.

Flappy Bird, the notoriously frustrating app from .GEARS Studios, has become a surprise hit in the iTunes Store, occupying the number one download spot for more than two weeks. But is the climb genuine?

When the game was initially published by Dong Nguyen in May, it had little success. According to the download tracking site App Annie, Flappy Bird reached 892 and 1078 on US Kids and Family download charts respectively before plummeting into obscurity days later. In November, however, its ranking began to climb. By January 17, it was the number one free game on iTunes.

Carter pointed out that, as an app developer and marketer, he has never before seen late-breaking success like this in the iTunes store. Further, similar games published by Nguyen, including Super Ball Juggling and Shuriken Block, have had the same download spikes.

On Saturday, Nguyen sent a series of tweets warning that he was going to remove the app in just 22 hours. Fans pleaded with him to keep it available, but by Sunday at 12 p.m. ET, the app was no longer downloadable.

Perhaps the app went viral because it is so frustrating play. The concept of the game is to keep a bird afloat by tapping it through a series of obstacles. The game is designed to be simple, but the task is extremely difficult.
